Commercial Vehicle Finance.Structured Around the Tax as Much as the Rate.

A work vehicle is classified by the ATO before it is financed by anyone, and that classification sets a ceiling on what you can depreciate and how much GST you can claim. We compare 100+ lenders, and we make sure the structure suits the vehicle you are actually buying.

100% free to you. Lenders pay us, not you.
Chattel mortgage, hire purchase or lease Structured before it is submitted

15 minutes. No paperwork, no obligation, and we do not approach a lender until you have approved it. Bring the vehicle you are looking at and your GST basis, and we will tell you which structure suits before you order anything. Lenders pay us a commission on settlement and we disclose it in writing before any work begins.

What Is Commercial Vehicle Finance and How Does It Work?

Commercial vehicle finance is funding for a ute, van, light truck or car acquired for business use, secured against the vehicle itself. Because the purpose is business rather than personal, it is not regulated consumer credit. The structure you choose, usually a chattel mortgage, a hire purchase or a lease, changes your GST and depreciation position as much as the rate does.

The part most buyers miss is that the vehicle is classified before it is financed. The ATO treats a motor vehicle as a car if it is designed to carry both a load of less than one tonne and fewer than nine passengers. Vehicles above either threshold, such as a one-tonne ute or a panel van, are not cars, and the caps that apply to cars do not apply to them.

Because the purpose is business, Best Interests Duty does not apply to this finance. What we do instead is disclose in writing how we are paid, before any work begins, on every facility we arrange. If the vehicle is being bought for personal, domestic or household use, that is regulated consumer credit and it belongs on our car loans page.

Why Businesses Come to Us for a Work Vehicle

Six situations cover most commercial vehicle enquiries. In two of them the right page is a different one, and we will say so.

A first ute for a sole trader or new ABN

Mainstream lenders want an established trading history. Specialist asset funders assess newer businesses on other evidence, so a decline in one place says very little about the appetite of the rest of the market.

Replacing a vehicle before the old one is paid out

The payout figure on the existing facility against what the vehicle is now worth decides whether this works. That arithmetic happens before you order anything, not after the new one arrives.

A dual cab that goes home with the employee

Two separate questions sit on the same vehicle: whether it is an eligible vehicle for the fringe benefits tax exemption, and whether the private use stays inside what the ATO accepts. Both are worth settling before delivery.

A passenger car put through the business

Legitimate and common, and the caps below apply in full. The ceiling on what you can depreciate and claim is set by the ATO rather than by the lender, and no structure gets around it.

More than one vehicle at once

Separate contracts per vehicle get unwieldy quickly. One facility sized to a replacement cycle usually suits better, and that sits on our fleet finance page.

Prime movers rigids and trailers

Heavy transport is assessed by a different group of lenders, on condition and application rather than a blanket age cap. That belongs on our truck finance page.

Car limit 2026-27 $69,883, the cap on the cost used to work out depreciation on a passenger car
GST credit cap $6,353, being one-eleventh of the car limit, where the limit applies
Luxury car tax Thresholds $91,661 fuel-efficient and $80,809 other, and no GST credit on the tax paid

Built on 25 Years in Australian Finance

Joseph Sukkar started in finance in 2000 and founded Intellect Finance in Penrith in 2005. Since then the team has arranged more than 6,500 loans for clients across Australia, from first homes to complex commercial and asset finance.

Vehicle finance sits with Chantelle, our Asset and Personal Finance Specialist, who writes it every day. It is the kind of file where the useful work happens before anything is ordered, because the vehicle is classified before it is financed and that classification sets the ceiling on what you can depreciate and how much GST you can claim. What we settle at that point is how each structure works, which lenders write it and what it costs, so the facility suits the vehicle you are actually buying.

Part of Our 100+ Lender Panel

The names most people recognise are residential lenders. Much of what we arrange runs through funders that do not advertise to the public. Accreditation with a lender is not an endorsement by it, and which lender suits you is decided by your file rather than by who is on this list.

Ordering the Vehicle This Month?

Fifteen minutes settles the structure before the invoice exists.

Your Work Vehicle Is Classified Before It Is Financed and the Classification Sets the Ceiling

Most of the tax outcome on a business vehicle is decided by two things that have nothing to do with the lender: what the vehicle is designed to carry, and how the facility is structured. One test settles whether the caps apply at all. The other settles when you get the GST back. Six things follow, and a sharper rate does not move any of them.

01

One definition decides almost everything

The ATO treats a motor vehicle as a car if it is designed to carry both a load of less than one tonne and fewer than nine passengers. Four-wheel drives are included. Vehicles designed to carry one tonne or more, such as a utility truck or panel van, and vehicles designed for nine passengers or more, are not cars. Every cap below hangs off that one test.

02

The car limit caps the cost rather than the price you paid

Where the vehicle is a car, there is a limit on the cost you can use to work out depreciation. The ATO has set it at $69,883 for 2026-27. Spend more and the excess is simply not part of the depreciation calculation. No lender, structure or broker changes that, which is why the vehicle choice matters more than the facility.

03

The GST credit is capped by the same limit

Where the car limit applies, the most GST credit you can claim is one-eleventh of that limit, which the ATO has set at $6,353 for 2026-27. Two other points get missed: you cannot claim a credit for any luxury car tax you pay, and if the vehicle is used partly privately the credit is partial too.

04

A one-tonne ute is not a car so the caps fall away

Vehicles designed to carry one tonne or more are outside the car definition, so the depreciation cap does not apply to them. For GST the ATO puts it slightly differently, excepting a commercial vehicle that is not designed for the principal purpose of carrying passengers. Same idea, two tests, and it is worth checking the actual load rating rather than assuming.

05

Fringe benefits tax is a second test on the same vehicle

Passing the load test makes a vehicle eligible for the FBT exemption. It does not deliver it. Private use still has to stay within home to work travel, travel incidental to work duties, and non-work use that is minor, infrequent and irregular. The ATO says plainly that a dual cab used as the family taxi or for weekend trips is not exempt.

06

The structure decides when you get the GST back

Under a hire purchase entered into on or after 1 July 2012, all components of the supply are taxable and the ATO says you can claim the input tax credits up front rather than waiting until each instalment is paid, even on a cash basis. Under a lease you treat each payment as a separate purchase each tax period. Same vehicle, very different cash flow.

Checked 1 September 2026. The 2026-27 car limit, GST credit cap and luxury car tax thresholds are published by the ATO and were updated 9 June 2026. The car definition and the depreciation cap are from the ATO’s deductions for motor vehicle expenses guidance. The GST credit cap, the luxury car tax point and the commercial vehicle exception are from GST and motor vehicles. The FBT position is from exempt use of eligible vehicles, and the ATO sets out a detailed compliance approach in Practical Compliance Guideline PCG 2018/3 which we have not reproduced here. Hire purchase and lease GST timing is from GST, hire purchase and leasing. Thresholds change on 1 July each year. We are not registered tax agents and none of this is tax advice. Everything else on this page is described in the important information at the foot of the page.

Whether the vehicle belongs in the business at all, and under which entity, is a question for your accountant rather than for us. What we can do is explain how each structure works, which lenders write it, and what it costs. Talk it through with Chantelle.

Take the Dealer’s Business Finance or Arrange the Facility Separately?

The real question once you have chosen the vehicle. Both sides, including the times you should not use us.

Dealer

Finance it where you order the vehicle

  • One conversation, and the settlement is coordinated by the people holding the stock
  • Manufacturer-backed commercial programs on new stock can genuinely be sharp on price
  • Often the quicker route when the vehicle is in stock and the business is established
  • The structure gets chosen quickly, and structure is the part with tax consequences
  • A newer ABN or a thin trading history usually gets one answer, and it is often no
Broker

Arrange the facility before you order

  • 100+ lenders including specialist asset funders that never advertise to businesses
  • Chattel mortgage, hire purchase and lease explained against your GST basis, then your accountant decides
  • One lender chosen before anything is lodged, rather than your file shopped around
  • An approval in hand means you order the vehicle knowing the funding exists
  • It takes a conversation you have to book, which is slower than signing at the dealership

If a manufacturer program on new stock beats what we can find, take it, and we will tell you when that is the case. Those programs are subsidised to move vehicles and they are sometimes cheaper than anything else available to an established business buying in stock. What we can add there is the structure conversation, which the finance desk usually settles in about ninety seconds.

The expensive mistake on this page is not choosing the wrong lender. It is buying the wrong vehicle for the tax outcome you had in mind. If you are buying a passenger car well above the car limit because someone told you the business would absorb it, the ceiling is set by the ATO and it does not move. A one-tonne ute and a large passenger car can carry very different tax positions at similar prices, and that is worth knowing before you order rather than at the end of the financial year.

And a deduction reduces the cost of something you bought. It does not make it free. If the vehicle is not needed, no structure makes buying it a good decision, and we would rather write you a smaller facility next year than a large one you regret in six months.

If the business is under cash flow pressure rather than genuinely expanding, a vehicle is usually not the answer and a cash flow facility or a conversation with your accountant is. That earns us less and it is still the right order to do things in.

Check the Tax Position Before You Order

Whether the vehicle you have chosen sits above the car limit, and what a one-tonne ute would do to the same deduction. Fifteen minutes. No obligation.

The Structure Is the Part Worth Getting Right

A rate is easy to compare and easy to move. A structure chosen in a hurry sits on your books for the life of the vehicle and shows up in a conversation with your accountant months later.

Always in Writing

Best Interests Duty does not apply to business purpose lending, and any broker telling you otherwise has not read the legislation. What we do instead is put in writing how we are paid, which lenders were considered and why we recommended the one we did, before you sign anything.

Specialist Asset Funders as Well as Banks

Newer ABNs, thin trading histories, older vehicles and unusual configurations are written every day by funders that never advertise. A decline from a dealership panel tells you about that panel, not about the market.

No Fee. Not Even Clawback.

We do not charge you for the comparison, the structuring or the application, on any loan type. If the facility is paid out early we wear the clawback ourselves rather than invoicing you for it. Lenders pay a commission on settlement, disclosed to you in writing before any work begins.

Term Matched to Working Life

A seven-year term on a vehicle you replace every four leaves you paying for something that has already gone. We set the term against how long you will actually keep it, and against your replacement cycle, rather than against the smallest possible repayment.

How Commercial Vehicle Finance Comes Together

Four steps, and the first one is best done before you order the vehicle rather than after.

  1. 15 minutes

What you are buying and how you report GST

What you are buying and its load rating, which entity is buying it, whether you report GST on a cash or accruals basis, and how long you will keep it. No documents at this stage. You will finish the call knowing which structures are on the table and which lenders write them.

  2. You gather

    Documents

Lighter than a commercial property file by a long way. We confirm exactly which of these your chosen lender wants before you go looking for any of them.

    • ABN and GST registration details
    • Director identification and licence
    • Recent business bank statements
    • Financials or tax returns, for larger facilities
    • Details of existing equipment and vehicle facilities
    • Quote or invoice for the vehicle, with the build specification
  3. We handle

Structure then lender selection then submission

We set out how each structure works against your GST basis so your accountant can confirm the treatment, then choose the lender that writes your vehicle and your trading position before anything is lodged. The application is not shopped around.

  4. We manage

    Approval then settlement then delivery

We handle the documents and settle directly with the dealer or supplier so you can take delivery, and we make sure any existing facility over a trade-in is dealt with at the same time. If the first lender declines, we already know where it goes next.

Commercial Vehicle Finance FAQs

The questions business owners ask us most often before getting in touch.

What is commercial vehicle finance?

Commercial vehicle finance is funding for a ute, van, light truck or car acquired for business use, secured against the vehicle itself. Because the purpose is business rather than personal, domestic or household, it is not regulated consumer credit. The structure you choose, usually a chattel mortgage, a hire purchase or a lease, changes your GST and depreciation position as much as the rate does.

What counts as a car for tax purposes?

The ATO treats a motor vehicle as a car if it is designed to carry both a load of less than one tonne and fewer than nine passengers. Four-wheel drives are included. Vehicles designed to carry one tonne or more, such as a utility truck or a panel van, and vehicles designed to carry nine passengers or more, are not cars. That single test drives most of what follows.

What is the car limit, and does it apply to a ute?

The car limit caps the cost you can use to work out depreciation on a passenger vehicle. For 2026-27 the ATO has set it at $69,883, regardless of what you actually paid. It applies only to vehicles that meet the car definition, so a ute or panel van designed to carry a load of one tonne or more is not subject to it.

How much GST can I claim on a business vehicle?

Where the car limit applies, the most GST credit you can claim is one-eleventh of that limit, which the ATO has set at $6,353 for 2026-27. A commercial vehicle that is not designed for the principal purpose of carrying passengers is excepted from the limit. You cannot claim a credit for any luxury car tax you pay, and partial business use means a partial credit.

Will I pay fringe benefits tax on a dual cab ute?

It depends on two separate tests. The vehicle has to be an eligible vehicle, which for a dual cab means designed to carry a load of one tonne or more or more than eight passengers including the driver. Private use then has to stay within home to work travel, incidental travel and use that is minor, infrequent and irregular. The ATO says a ute used as the family taxi is not exempt.

When do I get the GST credit back, up front or over the term?

The structure decides it. Under a hire purchase entered into on or after 1 July 2012 all components of the supply are taxable, and the ATO says you can claim input tax credits up front instead of waiting until each instalment is paid, even on a cash basis. Under a lease you treat each payment as a separate purchase each tax period.

Can I claim the instant asset write-off on a work vehicle?

Possibly, and we do not publish a threshold because it changes. The instant asset write-off has been extended and varied repeatedly, the eligibility rules depend on your turnover, and the car limit still applies to passenger vehicles regardless. Check the current position with your registered tax agent or on the ATO website before you let it drive the purchase decision.

Does Best Interests Duty apply to business vehicle finance?

No. Best Interests Duty applies to credit provided for personal, domestic or household purposes, or for residential investment property. A vehicle financed wholly or predominantly for business purposes sits outside that framework, along with the responsible lending obligations. We disclose how we are paid in writing before any work begins regardless, and a vehicle for personal use sits on our car loans page instead.

Finance for a vehicle acquired wholly or predominantly for business purposes is not regulated consumer credit, and the Best Interests Duty and responsible lending obligations under the National Consumer Credit Protection Act 2009 do not apply to it. We disclose how we are paid in writing before any work begins. Tax thresholds on this page are set by the ATO, change on 1 July each year, and their application depends on your circumstances. Nothing on this page is credit assistance, tax advice or an offer of credit, and no outcome is guaranteed.

Important information General information only. Not credit assistance, tax advice or an offer of credit. We charge you no fee. Every caveat and source on this page is collected here. Tap to read.

General information only. The content on this page is general in nature and does not take into account your objectives, financial situation or needs. It is not credit assistance, financial advice, legal advice or tax advice, and it is not an offer of credit. You should consider whether it is appropriate for you and seek your own advice before acting on it.

Business purpose lending. Where a vehicle is financed wholly or predominantly for business purposes, that is not regulated consumer credit, and the Best Interests Duty and responsible lending obligations under the National Consumer Credit Protection Act 2009 do not apply to it. Different protections apply to business borrowers than to consumers. If you are unsure which framework your facility sits in, ask the lender and obtain the answer in writing before you sign. Finance for a vehicle acquired for personal, domestic or household use is regulated consumer credit and is covered on our car loans page.

Tax positions are not ours to give. The car limit, the GST credit cap, luxury car tax, depreciation, the instant asset write-off and fringe benefits tax are administered by the Australian Taxation Office. How any of them applies to your vehicle, your entity and your circumstances is a matter for a registered tax agent. We are not registered tax agents, we do not provide tax advice, and we explain how finance structures work rather than what your tax outcome will be.

Thresholds change every year. The car limit, the maximum GST credit and the luxury car tax thresholds are reset by the ATO with effect from 1 July each year. The figures on this page are the 2026-27 figures as published by the ATO and checked at the date shown. Confirm the current figures with the ATO or your accountant before relying on them.

Fringe benefits tax has two tests, not one. A vehicle being an eligible vehicle does not by itself deliver the exemption. The extent and nature of private use has to satisfy the ATO as well, and the ATO publishes a detailed compliance approach that this page does not reproduce. Whether your particular vehicle and usage pattern qualify is a question for your registered tax agent.

The vehicle is the security. Commercial vehicle facilities are secured against the vehicle, and lenders may also require guarantees from directors or additional security. If the facility is not met the lender can take and sell the vehicle, and any shortfall remains payable. Read what you are being asked to guarantee before you sign it.

Nothing here is a guarantee. Approval, borrowing capacity, pricing, terms, deposit requirements, trading history requirements, which vehicles a lender will finance and how long anything takes are determined by individual lenders, not by us. They differ between lenders and change over time, and individual lender policy is not published on this page. Any figure, range or timeframe on this page is indicative and is not a quote, an offer, or a prediction of your outcome.

How we are paid. Intellect Finance does not charge borrowers a fee for arranging finance, and does not charge a clawback fee where a facility is paid out early. Lenders pay us a commission on settlement. The basis of that commission is disclosed to you in writing before any work begins, together with the lenders considered and the reason for the recommendation.

Third-party information. Where this page refers to tax thresholds, legislation or regulatory guidance, that information is sourced from the relevant authority and was correct to the best of our knowledge at the date shown on this page.
