What Is an Unsecured Personal Loan and How Does It Work?

An unsecured personal loan is a fixed amount borrowed without pledging a car, a property or any other asset, repaid in regular instalments over a set term until the balance reaches zero. Because the lender has nothing to repossess, it prices the loan almost entirely on your credit history and income, which is why the rate you are offered can sit well above the one advertised.

The structure is simple. You receive the full amount once, the rate is fixed or variable, and each repayment covers interest and part of the balance, so the loan ends on a known date. That end date is the main reason to choose it over a credit card or a line of credit, which have no schedule bringing them to zero.

What varies is the cost. The comparison rate combines the interest rate and most fees into one figure, and it is the number to compare, because two unsecured loans with the same headline rate can carry very different establishment and monthly fees. If you have an asset you are willing to offer, a secured personal loan usually costs less.

What People Usually Borrow It For

Six situations cover most unsecured personal loan enquiries. The loan is the same in each. What changes is whether it is the right tool.

Consolidating cards and debts

The most common use and the one most likely to go wrong. One fixed repayment that ends on a date beats several cards with no end date, but only if the cards are closed once they are paid out. Otherwise the balances come back and the new loan sits on top of them.

A renovation without touching the mortgage

Smaller jobs, or a recently bought home without much equity yet. Cleared in a few years rather than spread across the mortgage. For larger or structural work see renovation loans.

A medical or funeral cost

Expenses that cannot wait for savings. The priority is getting it done without a string of applications, because each one is recorded on your credit file for five years.

A wedding or a major purchase

Workable on a short term. The useful test is whether the repayments would outlast the thing you are paying for. If they would, a shorter term or a smaller amount is usually worth pricing first.

Your credit history is not clean

Unsecured lending is where an imperfect file shows most in the price. Offering security, borrowing less or waiting until a default is older can change the offer more than switching lenders does. Defaults stay on a credit report for five years.

You would rather not pledge an asset

Reasonable even when you could offer security, since nothing you own can be repossessed. The lender can still pursue the debt if you default, so unsecured does not mean without consequence.

Personal and asset finance sits with Chantelle, our Asset and Personal Finance Specialist. On an unsecured loan the useful work happens before anything is lodged, because the rate is priced almost entirely on your file and every application is recorded on it. Working out which lender is likely to say yes, and roughly at what price, before applying is what makes the first offer the one worth taking.

Part of Our 100+ Lender Panel

The names most people recognise are residential lenders. Much of what we arrange runs through funders that do not advertise to the public. Accreditation with a lender is not an endorsement by it, and which lender suits you is decided by your file rather than by who is on this list.

Find Out Where Your File Sits First

Before anything is lodged. Fifteen minutes, no credit check.

What an Unsecured Loan Actually Costs You

The headline rate is the smallest part of the decision. Six things decide what an unsecured personal loan really costs, and most of them are settled before you sign.

01

The comparison rate not the headline rate

The comparison rate rolls the interest rate and most fees into one percentage. Two loans at the same headline rate can differ sharply once establishment and monthly fees are counted, and the comparison rate is where that shows.

02

Your file sets the price

With nothing to repossess, the lender prices on your credit history, income and what you already owe. Advertised rates are set for the strongest profiles, so the useful question is not what the lowest rate is but what your file will attract.

03

Every application is recorded

A credit enquiry stays on your credit report for five years, and a run of applications in a short period makes the next lender more cautious. Applying to several lenders to see who says yes is the expensive way to find out.

04

Fixed or variable changes the risk

A fixed rate keeps repayments the same for the life of the loan. A variable rate can move either way. Fixed usually suits consolidation, where certainty is the point, but check whether it carries an early repayment fee.

05

Paying it off early can cost you

Some loans charge a fee to repay early. If there is a real chance you will clear it ahead of schedule, a loan without that fee can be worth a slightly higher rate, and the comparison rate may not capture that difference.

06

Hardship help exists if things change

If you cannot keep up repayments, your lender must consider you for hardship assistance and give reasons if it refuses. That can mean a payment plan or a change to the loan. The National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007 is free.

Checked 21 September 2026. Secured and unsecured pricing, fixed and variable rates, loan fees and the warning about multiple applications are from ASIC Moneysmart, as is the definition of a comparison rate. The risks of consolidating debt into a home loan are from Moneysmart’s debt consolidation guidance and hardship assistance from its financial hardship page. How long enquiries, defaults and repayment history stay on a credit report is from the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner, and Best Interests Duty from ASIC Regulatory Guide 273. Everything else on this page is described in the important information at the foot of the page.

The unsecured loan worth having is usually the one you apply for once. Fifteen minutes with the amount, the purpose and what you owe is enough for us to tell you roughly where your file sits and which lenders are worth approaching. Tell us what you need.

Unsecured Loan or Roll It Into the Mortgage?

For anyone consolidating debt with equity in their home, this is the real decision. The lower rate is not the whole story.

Mortgage

Roll the debts into your home loan

  • Usually a lower interest rate, because the debt is secured against your home
  • One repayment, folded into a payment you already make
  • Spread across the remaining mortgage term, so you can pay more interest overall
  • Debt that was unsecured is now secured against your home
  • Nothing marks the date the consolidated debt is actually gone
Unsecured

A fixed term unsecured personal loan

  • A set end date, so the debt is gone in years rather than decades
  • Nothing you own is put up as security
  • On a fixed rate, the repayment stays the same every month
  • A higher interest rate than borrowing against your home
  • Higher repayments while it runs, because the term is short

The lower rate is often the more expensive option. Moving card debt onto a home loan cuts the rate, but spread across the rest of a mortgage it can cost more in total interest than a five-year loan at a much higher rate, and it turns unsecured debt into debt secured against your home. On $20,000, 25 years at a mortgage-style rate can cost well over twice the interest of five years at double that rate. Rolling it into the mortgage is still the right call when you will make extra repayments to clear it quickly, or when the unsecured repayment would genuinely strain the budget. If neither is true, the loan with a date on it is usually the better decision. Whichever you choose, it only works if the cards are closed.

Ask Us to Price Both Before You Consolidate

Tell us what you owe and what it costs you now. We will show you the total interest both ways, not just the repayment. Fifteen minutes. No credit check.

Why Use an Unsecured Personal Loan Broker Before You Apply Anywhere

Applying direct gets you one lender’s answer. Applying to several leaves a trail on your credit file that every later lender reads.

We Work Out Who Will Say Yes First

Before anything is lodged we match your file to the lenders whose policy suits it and tell you roughly where you are likely to land, so the one application you make is the one most likely to succeed at a price worth taking.

Legally On Your Side

A personal loan for personal, domestic or household purposes is regulated consumer credit, so Best Interests Duty applies. We must act in your best interests and give priority to your interests where they conflict with ours. Those obligations have applied to mortgage brokers since 1 January 2021.

No Fee. Not Even Clawback.

We do not charge you for the comparison, the structuring or the application, on any loan type. If you discharge the loan early we wear the clawback ourselves rather than invoicing you for it, which plenty of brokers do. Lenders pay a commission on settlement, disclosed to you in writing before any work begins.

We Will Say When Not to Borrow

If rolling the debt into your mortgage, securing the loan against a car you own, or waiting until a default is older would serve you better, we will say so. A loan that gets approved is not the same as a loan worth taking.

How an Unsecured Personal Loan Comes Together

Four steps, and nothing is lodged until you know roughly where your file sits.

  1. 15 minutes

    Before any application

The amount, what it is for, your income and what you already owe. No documents and no credit check. You finish the call knowing roughly where your file sits and which lenders are worth approaching.

  2. You gather

    The documents

An unsecured loan is assessed almost entirely on paperwork, so it matters that it is complete. We confirm exactly what your chosen lender wants before you chase any of it.

    • Your identification documents
    • Recent payslips, or tax returns if you are self-employed
    • Recent bank statements
    • Statements for every card and loan, including any you are consolidating
    • A realistic picture of your regular living expenses
  3. We handle

    One application to one lender

We lodge with the lender most likely to approve your file at a price worth taking, and manage it through to approval. Usually one enquiry on your credit file instead of several.

  4. Funding

Paying out what you are consolidating

On a consolidation loan the lender may pay the old debts out directly. Close those accounts once they are cleared, or the limits stay open and the balances tend to come back.

Unsecured Personal Loan FAQs

The questions people ask us most often before they apply for an unsecured personal loan.

What is an unsecured personal loan?

An unsecured personal loan is a fixed amount borrowed without pledging a car, a property or any other asset, repaid in regular instalments over a set term until the balance reaches zero. Because the lender has nothing to repossess, it prices the loan almost entirely on your credit history and income, which is why the rate you are offered can sit well above the one advertised.

How much can I borrow with an unsecured personal loan?

It depends on your income, your existing commitments and your credit history rather than on any asset. Lenders set their own minimum and maximum amounts and they differ, and the amount your file supports is often lower than the most a lender advertises. Larger amounts are usually cheaper secured against a car or your home.

Is an unsecured personal loan more expensive than a secured one?

Usually, yes. With no asset to fall back on, the lender carries more risk and generally charges a higher rate. A secured loan against a car you own, or borrowing against your home, will usually cost less per year. The catch is that the asset is then at risk if you cannot repay.

Should I consolidate debt into my mortgage or use a personal loan?

A mortgage usually offers the lower rate, but spreading the debt across the remaining term can cost more in total interest, and it moves unsecured debt onto your home. A fixed term personal loan clears it by a set date. Whichever you choose, it only works if the old cards and accounts are closed once they are paid out.

Will applying for a personal loan affect my credit score?

Each application is recorded as a credit enquiry and stays on your credit report for five years. Several applications in a short period can make lenders more cautious, which is why working out who is likely to say yes before applying matters.

Can I get an unsecured personal loan with bad credit?

It depends on what is on the file, and it is where an imperfect history costs most. Defaults stay on a credit report for five years and repayment history for two. Offering security, borrowing less, or waiting until a default is older can improve the offer more than trying more lenders.

What if I cannot keep up the repayments?

Contact your lender’s hardship team early. Your lender must consider you for hardship assistance and must give reasons if it refuses. Options can include a payment plan or a change to the loan, either temporary or permanent. The National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007 offers free financial counselling.

Does Best Interests Duty apply, and what does Intellect Finance charge?

Yes it applies. A personal loan for personal, domestic or household purposes is regulated consumer credit, so brokers must act in your best interests and give priority to your interests where they conflict with ours. We charge you nothing on any loan type, and no clawback fee if you discharge early. Lenders pay a commission on settlement.

Unsecured is not without consequence. If you default on an unsecured loan the lender cannot repossess an asset, but it can still pursue the debt, and a default can be recorded on your credit report for five years.

Debt consolidation. Consolidating debts into one loan can lower the rate or the repayment while increasing the total interest paid if the term is longer. It works only if the accounts being consolidated are closed once they are paid out.
